The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) Commonwealth Management Committee was established by the Commonwealth Sport Committee in 2003 to develop lifesaving sport in Commonwealth nations. The Committee's mandate is to provide Lifesaving Sport education, development and competitive opportunities to its participating nations. The Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships are hosted to advance the mission of the Society and to provide development opportunities for:
high-performance athletes on National Teams;
competitors on Development Teams aspiring to improve their performance;
coaches and team mangers at all levels;
officials;
Lifesaving Sport management within member nations;
Competition has been an integral part of RLSS training throughout its history, and official Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships have been held since 1991. In 2009, RLSS Canada will host the top athletes from the Royal Life Saving Society's Commonwealth nations will come together in Edmonton, Alberta to race for lifesaving supremacy from June 12 to 14.
